AI as Cognitive Ramp

The use of ramps, instead of stairs, made the physical environment accessible.

Destinations could be reached. Agency enabled. Personal capacities matched with better institutional capabilities.

Artificial Intelligence (Al) offers the possibility of a cognitive equivalent. Intents and journeys that were blocked by complexity and complication smoothed out. New ideas and new skills accessible as the blocks of incomprehension are smoothed away.

However, the risk is when the technology makes the journey irrelevant. There is no need to know, no need to learn, no need to make any effort. Without any effort, with no slope, there is a meaningless flatness. The person has no need to make any cognitive effort and that affects both how learning and memory work.

The ramp enabled journeys to destinations. The process and the goal. Both are needed. The Al must not take away both.

The technology should enable access not block the journey.
